We are thrilled to welcome Tatiana Martinez to the AWESOME community! With over two decades of experience in supply chain management, Tatiana is currently the Vice President of North America Demand at Colgate-Palmolive Company. Tatiana Martinez joined Colgate-Palmolive in 2001 in Cali, Colombia.  In her almost 24 years with Colgate, she has consistently “trailblazed” her way along a successful career trajectory from Industrial Engineer in the Cali manufacturing facility to her current role as Vice President of Demand for North America.  Throughout this journey she has paved the way, opened doors and given a helping hand to other women in the supply chain.

AWESOME

Tatiana, I’m so happy to welcome you to the AWESOME community of women leaders! What makes you excited about AWESOME?

Tatiana Martinez

There are a couple of things that excite me. First, getting to know the amazing women in the community and building that network. Second, getting inspired by professionally developed women and also the incoming young professionals from universities at AWESOME. At the recent Symposium, it was so inspiring to see the changes the younger generation is making. I felt energized because I learned from both the leaders and the younger generation in the room.

AWESOME

Was this your first time attending the AWESOME Symposium?

Martinez

Yes, it was my first time, and it was very impressive. The Scholars were incredibly memorable. I particularly liked the balance between technology and professional development. We discussed AI and how to apply it to elevate our roles in our organizations. We also shared how to become leaders and develop essential leadership skills.

AWESOME

How did you hear about AWESOME?

Martinez

It’s a funny story. I was visiting a Sam’s Club as part of my role  at Colgate-Palmolive. During my visit, they mentioned hosting an upcoming symposium. When I asked about it, they told me it was AWESOME. I looked it up online, and that’s how I found out about it.

AWESOME

I love that serendipity! Can you tell me more about your background and career journey?

Martinez

I am an industrial engineer with an MBA. I started 23 years ago in Colombia, South America, as an intern at Colgate. Colgate has been the only company I’ve worked for. I began my career in manufacturing and have worked in various roles, including as a line leader, supervisor, production planner, and on our quality team. After about six  years, I moved to Mexico to become the planning manager for our biggest toothpaste plant, becoming the first woman in that role.

I then moved to the US and transitioned from manufacturing to customer service and logistics. I’ve worked in demand planning, supply planning, and inventory planning at local, regional, and global levels. Leading different areas has been challenging and has required me to switch between operational and strategic roles.

Later, I moved to procurement, which was a new area for me. It was challenging, but I fell in love with it. Eventually, I returned to customer service and logistics as the VP for North America.

AWESOME

Wow, you have such an extensive background! Can you share more?

Martinez

What I appreciate most about my diverse experiences is the opportunity I’ve had to work at local and international levels. I’ve traveled to China and experienced different business cultures. Additionally, I lead the Colgate Abilities Network, an employee resource group focused on connecting people with disabilities to our products and ensuring our employees and their families with disabilities receive the best support. This role is close to my heart as my son has disabilities. I want to show others that it’s possible to be successful both professionally and personally.

AWESOME

That’s so touching and you have amazing worldwide experiences. Can you elaborate on the importance of cultural competence in your role?

Martinez

Absolutely. Being culturally competent is crucial, especially when traveling to various countries and working with people from many different backgrounds. Understanding and effectively communicating with people from different cultures is vital. Other important skills I’ve learned through my journey are influence and negotiation. At Colgate, I often lead without direct authority, so convincing others to follow a strategy requires strong influencing skills.

AWESOME

How do you balance the demands of leadership and personal growth? What strategies have helped you grow?

Martinez

I define what happiness means to me and prioritize based on that. My top priorities are my son’s quality of life and my professional aspirations. Becoming Chief Supply Chain Officer is a goal for me, but it’s not my only goal. Although my priorities have broadened throughout my career, I still give 100% to everything that comes my way. This clarity helps me balance my work and personal life effectively.

AWESOME

Has your definition of happiness changed over time?

Martinez

Yes, it has evolved. Initially, happiness for me was about achieving results and recognition. Now, with my family and son, my priorities have shifted. My son’s well-being is my top priority, followed by my career goals. This shift has brought contentment to my work-life balance.

AWESOME

In your opinion, what are some key opportunities and challenges for women leaders in supply chain today, and how can AWESOME support these issues?

Martinez

It’s important to support each other and be allies. If we work together, we all benefit. Being an ally means supporting others in meetings and sharing our experiences to inspire others. Networking is also crucial. Having a rounded network for different needs—career advice, personal support—can significantly impact success.

AWESOME

That’s a great answer. It sounds like advocating for others and yourself. What advice would you offer to women aspiring to leadership roles?

Martinez

Always put things in perspective. In the supply chain, we often try to do everything and can get overwhelmed. It’s important to take a step back and look at the overall picture. Enjoy life, prioritize your well-being, and remember to ask for what you need. Keeping this perspective helps maintain a healthy balance and achieve long-term success.
