— Theresa May, the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister, who faces some of the same types of bias women in other leadership roles face; namely, being underestimated because she’s a woman and having her wardrobe the object of scrutiny.
Prime Minister May points to another world leader, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and says, “When you think of what she’s actually achieved – there are still people who are a bit dismissive, perhaps because of the way she looks and dresses…What matters is – what has she actually done?”
May has also said, “You can be clever and like clothes” in response to members of the media calling attention to her “kitten-heeled animal print shoes.” She added, “One of the challenges for women in politics is to be ourselves.”
She was featured in a New York Times article titled “Theresa May’s Style: Put Your Head Down and Get to Work.”
